What's the best mulch to use in a vegetable garden?
Organic mulches like straw, sugarcane, or composted bark are great for veggie gardens. They break down over time, enriching the soil with nutrients and improving its structure. These mulches also help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Avoid dyed or treated mulches in food-growing areas. Lay the mulch 5–7 cm thick around plants, keeping a little space clear at the base of stems to prevent rot and pests.
How often should mulch be replaced?
Most mulches should be refreshed once or twice a year, depending on the type and how quickly it breaks down. Organic mulches like bark or composted mulch decompose over time, enriching the soil but thinning out. Check the mulch layer regularly—if it’s less than 5 cm thick or looks faded and patchy, it’s time for a top-up. Replacing mulch also keeps your garden looking neat and helps maintain its protective benefits.
What's the difference between bark and mulch?
Bark is a type of mulch, but not all mulch is bark. Bark mulch is made from tree bark—usually pine or hardwood—and tends to break down more slowly, making it ideal for long-term coverage. Other mulches may include composted green waste, straw, wood chips, or synthetic materials. Each type has different benefits. Bark is great for decorative appeal and durability, while composted mulches feed the soil faster but need more frequent replenishing.
