What is the best soil for a vegetable garden?
The best soil for a vegetable garden is a rich, well-draining mix with plenty of organic matter. Look for a blend that includes compost, loam, and other nutrients to support root development and water retention. The ideal soil should be loose enough for roots to grow freely but dense enough to hold moisture. A pH close to neutral (6.0 to 7.0) is generally best for most vegetables. Consider adding organic fertilisers or compost before planting to give your veggies a strong start.
How do I choose the right garden soil mix?
Choosing the right garden soil mix depends on what you're growing and the condition of your existing soil. For raised garden beds or new garden areas, a general-purpose garden mix with compost and soil conditioner is a good start. For lawns, a sandy loam topsoil or turf underlay promotes drainage and root establishment. If you’re growing plants that require specific conditions (like natives or acid-loving plants), specialised blends may be needed. It’s best to match your soil mix to the specific demands of your project.
What's the difference between garden mix and soil?
"Garden mix" typically refers to a blend of soil, compost, and organic materials specifically prepared for planting. It’s designed to offer ideal drainage, structure, and nutrients. "Soil" on its own may refer to raw earth—topsoil, clay, loam, or sand—without amendments. Garden mixes are usually more balanced and ready-to-use, while raw soil may need improvement depending on its quality. Garden mix is best for planting and landscaping, while soil may be better suited for levelling or sub-surface use.
