What type of sand is best for paving?
The best sand for paving is coarse, well-graded paving or bedding sand—often referred to as washed river sand or sharp sand. It provides the stability needed to create a firm, level base beneath pavers while allowing for proper drainage. Avoid using fine sand or beach sand, as these can shift under pressure and cause pavers to move or settle unevenly over time. A proper compaction process is also essential for long-lasting results.
What gravel should I use for drainage?
For effective drainage, use clean, coarse gravel such as 10mm or 20mm drainage aggregate. This type of gravel allows water to pass through freely, preventing pooling and promoting healthy runoff. It’s commonly used in French drains, behind retaining walls, under garden beds, and around footings. Make sure the gravel is free from fine particles, which can compact and reduce drainage effectiveness. In some projects, a geotextile fabric layer can help keep the gravel clean and separate from surrounding soil.
Can I use sand or gravel for a driveway?
Yes, both sand and gravel can be used in driveways, but with different roles. Gravel, such as road base or blue metal, provides a strong, compacted surface that supports vehicles and resists erosion. Sand, particularly coarse or crusher dust, may be used as a bedding layer under pavers or bricks. It’s important to choose materials that are appropriate for traffic load, slope, and drainage to avoid issues like ruts, potholes, or runoff over time.
