What type of soil is best for laying turf?
The best soil for laying turf is a well-draining loam or turf underlay that offers a balanced mix of sand, silt, and organic matter. This promotes strong root development, good water retention, and effective drainage. A depth of 100–150mm is generally recommended to give the turf enough room to establish. Avoid heavy clay or overly sandy soils without amendments, as these can restrict growth or dry out too quickly.
How do I prepare my yard before laying turf?
Preparation is key to long-term turf health. Start by removing any weeds, rocks, or debris. Then level the area and apply a layer of turf underlay, raking it to an even depth of around 100mm. Water the soil lightly and compact it slightly to create a smooth base. You can also apply a starter fertiliser before laying turf rolls. Make sure the area is free of dips or lumps, so the turf sits evenly and roots quickly.
How often should I water new turf?
Newly laid turf needs consistent watering to establish roots. For the first two weeks, water lightly but frequently—usually once or twice a day depending on weather. The goal is to keep the underlay moist without over-saturating. After the first two weeks, gradually reduce watering as the roots take hold, transitioning to a deeper, less frequent schedule. Early morning is the best time to water, as it reduces evaporation and prevents fungal issues.
